archaeological park and museum of ulcisia castra

szentendre, hungary 2006

Archaeological sites and museums share the same main function, they are a place of learning and a source of new knowledge for researchers/scientists and the public/users of the area. Therefore the two phenomena are combined into a single whole. This whole can be divided into three categories: (1) Museums with buildings or parts of buildings “in situ” (all archaeological parks!); (2) Museums where archaeological structures that are otherwise difficult to transport are moved and displayed (open-air museums); (3) Museums displaying archaeological objects (usually artefacts) that are easy to transport and are not connected with a certain place (museums). The concept of the archaeological park for Ulcisia Castra both in terms of content and form consists of all three categories and a whole range of facilities intended for educational work in the park itself (museum, lecture room, historical workshops area) and scientific research (a scientific research centre and library, a large exhibition area, lectures, organisation of expert meetings, experimental archaeology workshops). The transformation of the archaeological site can be further defined with the following names as visual series production, protective roofs, analogue, simulation and new architecture. The varied types of defined transformations each have different characteristics. The new architecture within the archaeological park complies with modern principles of construction, materials and expression, making the build-ings clearly stand out and differ from the reconstructions of archaeological structures (that are mostly the result of speculation and a work of art that may have little in common with the original).
